Brain and vascular Physiology

Lara currently researches and teaches at the University of Zürich, Institute of Veterinary Physiology, Vetsuisse Faculty. She has extensive research and teaching experience in the scientific field of blood-brain barrier and vascular physiology and dysfunction.

Lara studied at the University of Sussex in Brighton, recieving an MSc in cellular and molecular biology and PhD in molecular neuroscience. As a postdoctoral fellow, she conducted hypoxic research in the Department of Pathology, Yale University, New Haven, USA and Institute of Physiology at University of Zürich, Switzerland. She completed her habilitation in 2015 in vascular physiology at the Vetsuisse Faculty of University of Zurich. Lara has worked in, and successfully led, numerous research projects and developed new methods for cell research, especially in the blood-barrier field in cooperation with renowned foundations such as Novartis, Von Tobel Foundation, Sassella Foundation, the Swiss MS Society, the Olga Mayenfish Foundation and many more. She has published numerous research papers and is a member of many international associations.

In 2018, together with colleagues, Lara recently dabbled in founding a start-up Swiss medtech company specialized in identification and development of biomarkers for the life science, cosmetic and food industries using unique and proprietary mass spectrometry-based technologies. In her role as communications and marketing director she gained invaluable insight and knowledge into the business world of venture capitalism.
